All About Poinsettias
Welcome to PoinsettiaDay.com, celebrating the beautiful plant we've come to associate with Christmas. December 12th is Poinsettia Day. The date marks the death of Joel Roberts Poinsett, an American botanist, physician and Minister to Mexico who in 1828 sent cuttings of the plant he'd discovered in Southern Mexico to his home in Charleston, South Carolina. Botanically, the plant is known as Euphorbia Pulcherrima. Poinsettias are a wonderful worldwide holiday tradition. Displayed alone or in groups, they add a festive splash of color to every decor.
The Legend of Poinsettias
A charming story is told of Pepita, a poor Mexican girl who had no gift to present to the Christ Child at Christmas Eve services.
As Pepita walked sorrowfully to church, her cousin Pedro tried to console her. "Pepita," he said, "I am certain that even the most humble gift, given in love, will be acceptable in His eyes."
Pepita gathered a bouquet of common weeds from the roadside, for this was the only gift she could give. As she entered the chapel and approached the alter, her spirits lifted.
Forgetting the humbleness of her gift, the girl laid the weeds at the feet of the Christ Child. Suddenly, Pepita's ordinary weeds burst into brilliant red blooms! This miraculous event was
named the Flores de Noche Buena, or Flowers of the Holy Night. Today, we call these flowers poinsettias.
"Your life is much more than meets the eye."
When you feel stressed out, burned out and maxed out,
it's natural to conclude that life is hard.
Wait a minute!
Take a step back and reflect.
Think of all the things that you are thankful for.
You have your health,
your family
and all those little things
you normally take for granted.
When its seems that you're rough-riding the coattails of life,
watch a sunset,
listen to good music
or delve into an engrossing book.
Allow yourself time to reflect on the gifts you have been given,
both big and small.
Sometimes we need to step back,
to look clearly at who we are and what we have.
Life is always made up of more than meets the eye.
Once we see this,
we can put things back in perspective
and regain a sense of serenity.
We Need A Little Christmas Haul out the holly, Put up the tree before My spirit falls again Fill up the stocking, I may be rushing things, But deck the halls again now. ![]() For we need a little music, Need a little laughter, Need a little singing, Ringing through the rafter, And we need a little snappy Happy ever after, Need a little Christmas now. |
While creating wives,
God promised men that
Good and obedient wives
would be found in
all the corners of the world.
